Amy Achrysalis in front of Riptide

I am an avid scuba diver and visual artist. I combine these two passions by painting lots of works inspired by water!  I enjoy working in collaboration with gravity. I apply tinted glazes through a meditative process of splashing, dripping, angling and rotating the canvas to shape the merging lines and bold colors. The results are stunning organic shapes that invite exploration and challenge the viewer to to define what they see.

Florida Keys

A Collection of Works Inspired by the Florida Keys.

The Florida Keys series is inspired by the some of the beautiful dive sites available along the string of islands known as the Florida Keys, a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off Florida’s southern tip, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Gulf Coast: Flower Gardens

A Collection of Works Inspired by the Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary

The Flower Gardens series is inspired by the amazing marine life visible when scuba diving in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, located 110 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

I have dived many tropical destinations and am still surprised at the beauty that can be found so close to the Texas shore. Life in the Flower Gardens is an unexpected riot of color, shapes and textures.

Ritual Series

This series is named after the process of creating the work.

Each Ritual painting starts with a heavily textured birch panel. I slowly build bright, saturated colors with sheer tinted glazes by pouring thin layers onto the work and letting them drip. I then flip the canvas and repeat the process again and again, pouring and turning to build the transparent layers into a deep, rich texture. The work is then finished with a thick coat of resin to impart a glass-like finish.

The highly-saturated red can be difficult to photograph accurately. Here are a few notable photos from the 11-piece series.
